You walk in the darkness,
The path ahead covered in mud and dust,
The air filled with the scent of death,
Loud bangs always filling your ears,
You hear your comrades scream in the night,
Friends and enemies alike dying right by your side,
These memories tend to stay with you even after returning home,
They fill your dreams at night,
You will always remember that dusty road,
And the people lost on it,
The war will carry on inside your head,
You are a new person,
Changed by the things you've done and seen,
No one ever leaves the war with their mind squeaky clean.
