This is the time the shooting starts
The ambulances clear the streets
As they rush the dying to the hospitals
Last night three young men killed
In Bed-Sty another drive by
About a mile or so from here
(The bars on the window manufactured
By fear) and soon September ends
The darkness draws the shades down
Even earlier and calls the kids
Off their bikes the basketball courts
And all that sometimes falls too short
A few weeks ago an infant shot in the head
Lying by a window in her mother's bed
A stray bullet that's called for want of a
Better phrase for death's absurdity today ...
I wonder how many they'll kill tonight
By time the darkness is shot down by the light
