The prison wall
The black expanse
We look up
"Why's it here?"
"Why we're here?"
Here, there
Everywhere
The question persists and begs for answers
Who placed it in the place of thought?
The dark wall
The prison yard
We look around and there it is
"How?"
"Why?"
"What is this?"
The question is alive and it persists
It itself, the greatest subterfuge
I know, Descartes didn't
The question itself is our answer
We can't know
We were made contingent
The stars, cracks of light
Upon the wall, the black expanse
I almost hope they never open
There in lies what I need most
There in lies what I dread most
Like a gallows or a pardon
I won't know until tomorrow
I know what I was promised
Between the bars, I see a life
Its far beyond
Beyond my grasp
I almost hope I never have it
Still, I pray for pardon, not a nooseman
