the radioactive decay
of the sounds that slink through the sleeping street
breathe into my open window, promising relief
promising a range of motion, promising theflashing lights of the city
promising adderall and promising a stability
that we humans can only manage to find in lethargy
because the cancer in our bones
makes pretty patterns, embroidering in green thread
through the track marks in our arms and the track marks
of the city, laid down by men long ago
who thought that if they had the illusion of freedom,
their life would have
some rhythm
