silence settles in the spaces
between the hills.
holds dear her secrets.
departs piecemeal
to urgent coming day.
unmoved by the threat
and the roiling clouds,
a moist hope before storm,
she will always return.
silence looks at us
costless, not free.
turning on us, making us small.
stopping us in our headstrong
rush to be determined,
convicted and released.
silence yields to silence,
as brother to sister,
speaking loudest
when expected to
speak, sing, wail, and
failing to do so.
by silence we commend,
by silence we condemn.
silence is marathon
deep placed in your eye
telling me of its wishes.
ignored, at the risk of forbearance.
broken, at the risk of innocence.
the country between grows deeper
with conscience begging
to be listened to.
she is examination that roots
in the spaces of the heart.
she is an unwalled room
where i might sit still and meet
the silent prayers that leave my lips.
