They say,
when they think we won't understand,
That our dogs live on a farm now, happy and free,
That our Grandmothers are only sleeping
And that our Brothers are bald because they were tired of their hair,
And they're thin because they're not hungry anymore;
That the blood running down our Sisters' arms
Are accidents and nosebleeds that ended
In the wrong places.
They say they can mask the pain,
That Santa Claus and magic and tooth fairies are our guardian saviors,
That all cuts are skin deep and fixed with a kiss and a band-aid
That ice cream is the cure for a day that greets us with blows
Of rain, fists, shrill cries of fearful hate,
That we can live in a better world if we force it,
Not if we enforce it-
They say that they are protecting us,
But from what?
The world?
Ourselves?
The truth?
We go on.
And we are stronger.
And tears of chocolate and vanilla, mocha and caramel
Fall from our faces into our bowls.
Masked.
Just like they want it.
Silent.
Just like we have to be.
