To love is to lose,
like I lost you.
To lose is to fail,
like I failed you.
But it were I who withered away slowly
and then all at once.
I crumbled like eroded pavement under harsh, spring showers.
I shattered like fragile, hand-painted china on the tile floor of a new home.
I melted like gooey candy to the leather cushion of a new car on a summer day.
My heart still beats on, both a failure at letting go and living with the loss of purpose.
Living with the loss of you.
