Even Sweeter

Momma received a poem when she was a little girl
Designed to encourage her to be the sweetest in the world
Instructions from her father full of wise advice
Answers to a test she would fail once or twice
But eventually she would get it and turn out to be
Everything the her Father desired her to be
Stay Sweet was the title, maturity the goal
A source of love and comfort when the world got cold
A sure foundation in the sandy surface of youth
From eyes of experience through the vision of truth
Read it if you will, then return to this
Sweet is more than a warm hug and gentle kiss
Sweet is an attitude you work on everyday
With respect to those who travel along the way
Sweet is not a doormat to be trampled upon
Rather the humility to except when you are wrong
Loving even those who may be undeserving
Serving even those who will never do the serving
Forgiving every offense yet drawing a line in the sand
Not subjecting yourself to the same abuse again and again
Listen for understanding, ponder prayerfully all advice
Consider all testimonies because they came at a price
Choose your friends wisely, all the glitters isn't gold
Even some family will betray you if the truth is told
But God is always faithful, test everything by Him
Commit yourself to Jesus and He will keep your heart from sin
Honor your father and mother on earth, do your best to try
And you are promised long life from your father in the sky
Take everything your parents are, the best and the worst
And build a better life of blessings and discard the cursed
Use the good as a foundation for a solid life for you
And the bad as a clear example of what not to do
We all have made our mistakes and you will have your turn
But you will be sweeter when you view mistakes as lessons learned
Stay sweet, yet even sweeter from the knowledge you gain
Avoid the pitfalls and failures that will cause undo pain
You are the next generation; your time is here and now
And all the things we didn't do well, you can show us how

Be even sweeter as you grow, even sweeter as you live
When you have daughters of your own sweeter is yours to give

To My granddaughters
