They Call it Colic By aldo kraas, www.PoetryPoem.com/poet11586 Unlock all Features - Upgrade to Poetry Prime
Colic's what they call it, but I call it crying...
for hours on end, despite what we tried and...
although it's defined, it is NOT understood...
so the "possible cures" really did us no good!
Colic is crying for at least 3 hours a day,
at least 3 days a week, for a few weeks they say!
For us it was most days for hours on end,
for more than 12 weeks driven right round the bend!
Colic is something doctors know little about...
"It's a phase, it will pass, so just ride it out"!
The distress that it causes goes largely ignored.
I think it's a topic on which doctors are bored.
Asides from the fact that my baby's in pain,
the noise that she makes drives us almost insane!
And we love her of course with all that we have,
but I cannot remember the last time we laughed.
Books suggest swaddling, swaying and "shushing",
or sleeping on her side stuck to a cushion.
But when she's caught up in a colic caused sulk,
she has strength that could beat the Incredible Hulk!
She fights out of the swaddle and cries even more.
The swaying and shushing do nothing of course!
She seems to get worse the harder we try...
to follow advice and use potions webuy.
So we "ride out" the hell each night for 12 weeks,
and continue to soothe her each time she "speaks",
in a language consisting of shrills, cries and screams.
This colic is ruining my motherhood dreams!
I thought that through love I'd never get mad,
I would ease all her pain whenever she's sad.
Instead I survived through tears and faked smiles,
as my soothing was answered by her yells loud and wild!
When she took a rare rest from her constant loud crying,
I could only assume that my brain had been fried and...
I still hear her shrieks whilst I shower or sleep,
the noises of colic are engrained rather deep!
Now over the worst she smiles more than screams,
I can honestly say she is more of a dream.
So our bond it survived three long months of crying,
but if I said it was easy - I'd only be lying!
