In 1956 I transferred schools in my senior year
I knew no one at the new school
Didn't even know where the school was located
So indeed fate sent me a friend
A car came speeding down the hill out of control
Off the road through our shrubbery and down the hill
Half hour or so the doorbell rang
"Sir my Dad is going to kill me"
Two young boys sheepishly confronted my father
He was sixteen not supposed to take the car
My step dad said, "Your dad does not have to know
We all make mistakes young man. I can fix hedges
But you boys were honest enough to own up to it.
That day I met my best friend Larry
Next day he came with his friend, a mitt bat and ball
They said you are new do you play ball?
his best friend was Ron Santo
A future Hall of Fame player for the Cubs
WE three bonded in love of sports
Fifty nine years we have been best friends
Ron has since gone to Hall of Fame heaven
A dream the three of us shared
Two of us interrupted the dream serving our country
Today we are getting old together have families
It put a strain on the friendship as did health
My friend is sick needs oxygen to breath
This week my friend called me, "How come you have not called?"
Soon it was all my fault the friendship was over
My wife died I am lonely and my friends have abandoned me
I could hear his tears and knew there needed healing
He said some harsh thing about the friendship over
Next morning the phone rang, "Buddy I apologize
I have been sick and I have been lonely."
Friends don't end that way
I was at his front door the next morning
I knew what his problem was he lost his wife
one year ago in January he needed me
For you who do not know friendship are sometimes
forgotten but a true friendship is forever
Three hours we talked over old time old stories
WE made a pack we well see each other at least weekly
Any harsh words said in hurt mean nothing
That is the blessing of a true friendship
