 Poems by T.J. Swisher

they sit, each with a steaming cup of joe,
chatting about youth and middle age,
               cataracts and greying hair,
two ladies well graced in age,
                    adorning classic jewelry,
dressed in pale shades of sunflower yellow
 and magnolia pink,
        each in a partial perm
                     carrying flowery hand bags,
elegance flows from them unknowingly,
true friends from years of life’s adventures

she walked by, hair covered in a worn bandanna,
her face dwarfed by cataract sun-glasses,
  age apparent along smile lines
              and wrinkled hands,
         her gait uneven
                her demeanor tender and sweet,
coffee regular and the daily news her companions,

  door chimes rattle
      greeting mother and toddler,
faces wind checked from the heated summer air,
she breathes out a sigh walking to the counter,
a fruit smoothie to split between the two,
in the comforts of corner booth
they share time creating a memory to last,

    the afternoon wanes
a cycle of continues of ladies
         entering and passing along,
age across the generations and places in time
represented and connected through
               a community coffee spot.
