 TWO OWLS ON PIPER ROAD
Keep thinking of white faces
Big round eyes staring at me
The draw where they live
Where there are woodchuck holes
Or the animals others call groundhogs
Owls eat them whole
It's why captive owls
Will become deformed
If one only feeds them meat
They have to digest the bones, too
Those owls have defecated
All over the walls of the draw
So I assume they live there
Have to go back for more photos
Not be afraid they could attack me
Have to be sure of their subspecies
But I think they are barn owls
White faces white belly
Orange-feathered head with
Gray and black wings
Didn't think about owls
Until I came to the country
Now I think of them often
They have become a part
Of my soul.
