Fever Dreams

I toss and turn as I lie in bed,
Dreams unlived running through my head.
A myriad of ways my life could have turned;
Now those bridges of regret have all been burned.

I sweat and cry out as flames wreath my mind,
So many choices to make, so few paths defined.
Nightmares undreamed parade before my eye,
Bloated corpses, shuffling zombies; even the dead do not die.

With every choice made, another horror is unleashed,
Avoiding one danger, I release another beast.
I find myself entombed alive with family deceased,
"We're waiting for you," they say, preparing the grisly feast.

I scream in horror and run, straight into the utterly crazed.
An alien zombie covered in cottage cheese?  Worse than being mazed!
Each turn I make another peril appears, no haven can be found,
No choice is right, no path is safe, doom has me bound.

Further and further from reality I find my dream self drawn,
Knowing I must escape and return to my body before the coming dawn.
Else here I must remain, amid this fading realm of nightmare dreams,
While my soul less body wastes away, and my spirit endlessly screams.
