 Almost Home
Their need to be became too ours
As call to arms became their finest hour
And so they went to foreign lands
To fight a war peace hates and damns

Once upon a time they were
Laughter of child at home still heard
Echoed throughout parents life time
Tears that fall for those called mine

Through ramparts watched this very day
As cook outs smoke on sky display
More than a meal, more than what played
In life and death in silence prayed

Remember them through hand shake yours
Hug those unknown upon your tour
In Washington before the wall
At monuments where they stand tall

Their sacrifice spelled out your freedom
Of yesterdays, today, to breathe in
Of blood crimson before the tide
Spilled life on shores foreign abide

They are the young and aged this day
The sacrifice each one would pay
To give the gift some take for granted
With hope you see upon earth planted

Almost home will be their thought
As was with those who lost but fought
On battlefields unknown to you
On distant lands now called home too

Almost Home
