Shadows

I have you here in a photo frame,

in it you're young though you died

in 1916. Why is it, that you cast

long shadows around me, I never

knew you, never heard your name.

One hundred years ago you left.

took the queens shilling, departed

for the great fight, that's all I know

except you never returned, lie buried

somewhere in Flanders. Days i wonder

did you regret or accept, that with your

sacrifice, life would prevail in the shadows

of your grave. Grandad is your name, one

i attach to your photo in the gold frame.

The shadow you left is, i never got too

know you or your name. Today I sit on

the end of my bed, stare at your photo,

you're only a young guy in uniform, too

young to be a grandad, but we're the

the shadows left behind, even though

we never thought enough about your

sacrifice, to even ask anyone for your name.
