Progress

There's a common desire among most men
That for progress, they should opt
But that depends on, after all
The perceptions they adopt.

We see great strides in medicine
With cures for dread disease
New measures to improve one's looks
Or replace bad hips and knees.

But it's not always progress
When many live in fear
And a politician's main concern
Seems more with his career.

Where society is corrupted
And lewdness is the norm
While laws are passed to justify
The slaughter of the unborn.

And I never thought I'd hear it said
That we've gone to the dogs
Or that our country would be ruled
By upstart ideologues.

Nonetheless, it is debatable
And based upon one's view
But is it really progress
Just because it's something new?
