When I was just a lad away back when
I would come up then with an idea or two
To make a hard job a slightly easier one
Using my head as even back then as I'd do
My grandfather he would say to me
Good job boy well have a look at that
He said that's using your brains boy
That'll put a feather in ya hat
I asked him about putting a feather in ones hat
And he said well I'll tell ya true
The horse brigade went to fight the first world war
And they took all Australian horses too
They were the best horsemen Australia had
And there was no doubting that
And there was no greater pride to be had at all
Than to be able to wear that feather in their hat
So that was quiet a compliment to say the least
As these horsemen were the greatest of them all
Sitting up upon the best horse flesh in the country
With a feather in their hat had them so proud and always tall.
