Forty Year Goodbyes
It doesn't seem that long ago
We said our last farewell
And promised that we'd stay in touch.
I guess we all meant well
But time can change so many things
And make us drift away
From all those special ties that bind
And thoughts of yesterday.
So when I looked upon your face
And realized forty years
Had slipped away without one word
I couldn't hold my tears
There was a time we'd march through hell
And never bat an eye
Today we share a warm embrace,
Both unashamed to cry.
The bonds of combat last for life
Some spoken, some implied
They even outlast faded names
And forty year goodbyes
