I wonder what I wonder

I wonder what I wonder, and I wonder it all day;
I wonder what I wonder, and I wonder what you'll say.
Each day you grow more distant, each moment you're away;
What feelings hide behind your eyes when you look my way?

I wonder what I wonder, and I wonder it all day;
I wonder what I wonder, why have you gone astray?
I gave all I had yet you want me still to pay,
My heart you wounded deeply, yet still you seek to slay.

I wonder what I wonder, and I wonder it all night,
I wonder what I wonder, and I wonder with all my might.
Though my tears fall like rain, and my heart is torn with pain,
Why do I sing this sad refrain, as my hopes go down the drain?

I wonder what I wonder, and I wonder it all night,
I wonder what I wonder, will the darkness turn to light?
As I long and as I hope, in my darkness blindly grope,
As I'm sliding down the slope, will no one throw a rope?
