Lost Before You Began

it was a vain struggle
for you and her
the snowy weather did not stop you

coming into the world
in a bus shelter
open to the elements

what did you think
when you drew your first breath
the cold and snow closing in
was this what you were expecting

what anguish to arrive
lashed about by the wing and wind
unable to gather the comforting warmth of
your Mother for survival

your arrival
was poorly-timed
your small yet great death
and not your name
duly noted in the news

lost before you began
and you had no given name

poor babe
no endless days stretched before to dream in
no friends to play with nor to
scheme with
abandoned
the wind whistling
sending you off to a
permanent midnight

I'll call you
Angel
not
Tragedy

I know when
you were born
you already wore wings

(otherwise
I will be lost too)
