Next time
(Have I got blues for you?)

The night was dark, the road was long

Say 'nothin's right,' you'd not be wrong

My girl went west, my life did too

Say 'all screwed up,' ain't that the truth?

And yet underneath what are the blues?

Bad mistakes come home to roost?

Well, maybe, but not always, sometimes

The blues can be therapeutic, remedial

Restorative. Yes, it hurts at first, so do

Most injuries, but in time the pain goes

Away and the heart starts to heal. Take

The pain, face the pain, it can't last

Forever and beyond the pain is a new

Day and the start of a better life to come

Can't sleep tonight my girl's run off

The butcher's gone, he closed the shop

I thought we bought a lot of meat

She bought enough to feed the street

And when at last the smoke died down I

Found my tears were all cried out. Which

Of course I expected them to be. I'm not

Going to sit around moping for anyone

She got what she wanted, now it's my turn

Keeping a home together was once my

Business and now it's my business again

Starting a new home that is

Sometimes the blues is a good place to

Be, not for long I hasten to add, but long

Enough to see the zigzag world around

You and your place in it. A lesson or two

In love is often a good thing makes for

A better lover – next time
