Impossible
the water so big it is a room
lit up by flashlights
it seems, to me,
to go on for miles
people surround us
their voices filled with excitement
like on Christmas morning
wading into the big room of lit-up water
all of them have
skeins of rope
like bolts of cloth
hanging off long long poles
so many small holes
unfold as they hit the water
I look up
My Papa's smiling
wading waist high
this room so much deeper than a bathtub
I'm holding his hand
glancing backwards at the piles of sand
I see my Mother holding the hand of my smallest brother
she's pointing at us out in the water
our neighbor Rosemary sits on the plaid blanket
cradling my other brother as he sleeps
his navy blue eyes are closed
I can just make out his dark curls
I look up then
into a sky filled with banana yellow moonlight
the moon lit up the sky that seemed
to be blinking with a million flashlights
I could almost wrap my arms around it
smiling
I say
"Papa, do you believe
God is looking down upon us?"
then the little silver fish came
tickling our bare feet
and we were dancing in
silvery moving waters
from a memory from a dream off the shore of
Lake Michigan.
