Binders

The yard was full of Binders
At certain times of the year
For overhaul and repair
As each Harvest drew near.
To most folk they were
Just ugly agricultural machines
But to me things of wonder
In those days before my teens.

I could sit on the seat
Or slip down deep inside
And I was away on
My magical ride.
The captain of clipper
Avoiding a pirate ship
Captain Dan Dare on
An interstellar trip.

Not a very sociable child
Much time spent alone
But inside those binders
Were worlds of my own.
With a child's eagerness,
Imagination unbarred,
I loved those old Binders
Parked in the old smithy yard

And I so looked forward
To that time of year
With approaching harvest
More Binders would appear.
And then I grew up
Forgot things that had been
For with adolescence
Girls appeared on the scene.
