Firing Squad

Since working with a local playwright on a tribute to a local WW1 Hero,  Jack Harrison VC, I have been haunted by that period.

Another dawn moment
Another dawn crime
Another act of violence
In a violent desperate time.

The firing squad paraded
On the barren ground
Every rifle charged but
One carrying a blank round.
They carried out the victim
Tied him to a chair
Filled full of whiskey
Just to get him there.
As one the rifles fired
On the officers shout
And then the firing squad
Marched off and fallen out.
Through each mind
A single thought was drilling
I hope that blank was mine
So I didn't do this killing.

Another act of violence
Another dawn crime
Another dawn moment
In a violent desperate time.
