Great Friendships

When friendships have been broken
Things are never quite the same
And as the days turn into years
Nobody wants the blame.

I know about that heartache
And the gnawing agony
Which made me realize that I
Must face reality.

That the strongest bonds between two friends
Can splinter and decay
When angry hearts no longer care
And love just fades away.

Turning good friends into strangers
Mere acquaintances at best
Because of conflicts, great or small
Which neither have addressed.

And oh, what needless pain they bear
As the years go slipping by
To see great friendships fall apart
Then wither up and die.

Yes, when those bonds are broken
Things are never quite the same
And until the issues are resolved
Both parties are to blame.
