Poetry is a strange thing
Corporations can’t own it

Although they try to use it when they talk to us
“Coke Is The Real Thing” but no one really believes it

But they buy it and drink it and sometimes even hum
The catchy tunes, “Things go better with…”

Poetry is a strange thing
Governments can’t control it

“We shall overcome” brought down generations
Of state enforced separation of peoples whose

Stories were as intertwined as a spider web
“Kumbyah” in the Gullah Language

Was the prayer inviting the Lord to be present

And even God can’t control poetry as Jesus himself screamed from the Cross
The words of the Psalm, “My God, My God, Why has thou forsaken me.”

Lover’s love poetry…”What light
Through yonder window breaks….”

And “How do I love thee,
Let me count the ways”

And mystics sometimes only speak through poetry
“To see the world in a grain of sand”

And children thrive on poetry
“Star light, Star bright, first star I see tonight”

But my favorite poem is
The silence between the words
