Grief

The pain of a mother
Who stands at the coffin
Of her only son
Who died in a far off land
Protecting his country
Is no less

Than the pain of a mother
Who holds the lifeless body
Of her 5-year-old daughter
Who died from Aides
Knowing there is nothing she can do
To protect the child
That she carries inside her now
From facing the same fate

Her pain is no less
Than the pain of a mother
Who buried her 17-year-old son
Who was murdered by his girlfriend
Who walked away clean
And will never be forced to answer
For the life that was taken

Her pain is no less
Than the pain of a mother
Who had to bury her son and daughter
That were killed by a drunk driver
In an accident
That almost cost her own life
A life
She would have gladly traded
For theirs

In life
There are so many things
Which we try and measure
Quantify and qualify
But far too often we realize
That for some things
Especially pain
There truly is no measure

Of grief
