 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

Matters not which branch we serve
I was National Guard in high school
Army reserves
One weekend a month
Under aged Mom had to give permission
Ammo handler and communication
Doen't matter what State the Guard serve
In emergencies they protect us
Joined Air force right after high school
Not all of us are heroes
I was a medic never in combat
A hayride truck turned over in San Antonio
51 kids were laying all over the road
At least two  did not survive
Lantern holder lost both legs
Two deaths but more in critical condition
I drove an emergency aid truck to scene
Had never before driven
Took back eighteen of less critical
For me a horrow movie come to life
Was repremanded the farmers kid beside me
Helped me through the shifts
From high school joined the service
Said I had no license
He said your in the Air Force son
Figure it out--eighteen shifts
It's what we do!
Found myself working in the Emergency room
Had not training in helocopter rescue
Had never been on a plane
In a bucket saw the pilot
He unconcious laying over a log
Pulled a pilot out of the water
Four year old Korean orphan
Off base in Osan Korea
Lost a stripe doing so
Not allowed bringing civilians on base
It is a life it didn't' matter
Pilot allowed me in a jet
Second pilot with controls
Thrill of  a lifetime
Flew a jet before a car
He honored me saying i saved his life
The pilot that is
But it bothered me I was not the pilot
Took training Great Lakes Naval Base
Under a Marine drill Sergeant
Air Force trained to be a Marine medic
But for the outbreak of the Asian flu
There i would be
Four days in a coma
Temperature of one hundred and three
Back in the Air Force medics I be
This week I sat next to a Viet Nam veteran
Proud of his Purple Heart
Proud to say he was a Marine
I was honored with slapped hands
And then i told him I had no war injuries
No purple heart for valor
Just a medic
There was a tear in his eye
He said I love you man and fist slapped
He said I wouldn't't be here except for a medic
Who came to me under fire and saved my life
And my life would not be free but for him
I joined the service to protect my country
I didn't't join to be a medic in a hospital
We parted knowing probably would not see each other
Not in this lifetime
But there is something about the brotherhood of veterans
That makes us lifelong friends
First three vehicles I drove
A greyhound bus, off road sixteen wheel ambulance
and a trainer jet
not in that order
Street to college after Air Force
Still did not have a drivers license
Needed the job
Employer asked if  i ever drove a bus
I didn't lie--a jet plane and an emergency ambulance
It was a step down getting a car license
Someday I well tell you about it
Reality not fiction wife taught me to drive
Military  was easy that was scary
