      “The Wall”

He spent a lot of time
building his wall
each brick was
carefully crafted
forming a seamless fit
a perfect circle
all the way
around him
safe
from the outside world
only a small slit
through the brick
that allowed him
a very limited view
of the life’s
of others
not really caring
to know more
about them
then their
basic information
and giving them
even less of his.
He liked the cold
and dark
his wall provided
him
never having to
expose
all his insecurities
to the light
keeping the temptations
of trust
friends
and relationships
out of his
available reach
but most importantly
was the wall’s ability
to keep Love
and all the other
emotions
associated with it
from ever touching
his heart,
his wall did have
one structural weakness
that was the
small viewing port,
it didn’t filter
what he saw
it only drastically
narrowed the field
of view,
yesterday
he was looking
through it
trying to find
a safe spot
to stand
in a crowded room
where he wouldn’t
have to interact
with the other
people around him
when he
caught a
quick glimpse
of a woman
as she walked by
for only the
briefest of moments
but her form
intrigued him
he continued to
follow her
as best he could
through the slit
in his wall
then she turned
to face his wall
as she
slowed her walk
her face
looked so fragile
as it looked a pond
his wall,
seeing this
strange emotions
vibrated through
his whole body
he became confused
unsure of what
he was experiencing
his wall
should be able to
protect him
from any type of
feelings
but especially
emotions,
he was afraid,
he stayed up
all night
adding an inner wall
to his protective circle
making his view
of the world
even smaller
no way
any type of feelings
or emotions
would be able to
squeeze through
that small opening
now,
he sat back
in his brick
and mortar
castle
alone
in the dark
and he was
pleased.
The next day
the woman returned
knocked
on his wall
tried to peer
into the dark
but he just
hide
in the shadows
of his wall
only looking out
after hearing her
walk away,
he leaned back
against his wall
a stream of light
shinning down
on to his lap
from his little
portal
to the world,
he reached under
a brick
and pulled out
a folded up
picture
of a young woman
the light
brought the picture
to life
in his hands,
he just sat their
looking at the
picture
tilting it
so the light
would reflect
off it
from different
angles
he turned
the picture over
and read
what was written
on the back
“Our Love is Stronger”
“Than Time its self”
“It will last”
“FOREVER”
Signed Jenny,
he folded up
the picture
and put it
back under
the brick,
and as he
quietly cried
he took a
trowel
and some fresh
mortar
and covered up
the portal
and the
light
FOREVER…
