“Heart of Hate”

All he saw
was hate,
for what
started as
a simple dislike
for the things
he saw
in his everyday
world
that really bothered
him,
he let
all these minor
offenses
annoying habits
of others
that most people
just blocked out
or accepted
as part of
normal
day to day
life
he has let
them grow,
he fed them
each issue becoming
it’s own monster
he treats each one
regardless
of its size
as a personal
assault
against him
he knows why
these attacks
have been plotted
towards him
they see him
as irrelevant,
of no consquesent
in anyone’s personal
life’s story
nothing but
a small bit player
in mankind’s
ongoing struggle
to survive
and he hated
them
for thinking this
about him
he knew they
worked together
in choreographed
teams
poking him
baiting him
trying to
box him in
to a corner
force an irrational
reaction
something
that could
tip the scales
in his brain
so they can
push his little
life
off stage
and make more
room for a
winner
one of their
kind
but he’s smarter
than they are
he’ll just produce
more Hate
fill up their
bag of tricks
with his evil
intentions.
He stands
at the bus stop
he knows
the teenage girl
standing behind
him
is rotten
to the core
she
is one of
them
as she screams
into her cell phone
talking about
meaningless
gibberish
it’s all part of
a well-rehearsed
act
trying to bring his
hatred
to a boil,
but even with
this insightful
knowledge
he can’t just
let it go
he swings around
wildly
face to face
now
with the teenage
girl
“Are you F---ing Stupid?”
“Or What?”
“No one Cares about Your”
“Immensely Boring Dribble”
not knowing
what to do next
he swings back
around
and steps into
the crosswalk
to leave
before someone
calls the cops
on him,
he hears a loud
ringing
in his head
as he opens
his eyes
to see a crowd
of people
with very concerned
looks
on their faces
looking down at
him
as he lies on
his back,
the teenage girl
he just unloaded on
asks him
“Are you all right”
“Mister?”
he replies with
“What the F---”
“Just Happened?”
an elderly man pipes up
“This girl just”
“Saved your life”
“You stepped”
“Right in front”
“Of a bus”
a young man
jumps in
“Yea Dude”
“She grabbed your hood”
“On your sweat shirt”
“And pulled you back”
“Just in time”
“She’s a Hero”
the teenage girl
blushing
“I’m no hero”
“I just wish”
“I could have saved”
“My cell phone too”
as she looks over
at her smashed
cell phone
lying in the street
right as her bus
pulls up and
rolls across
her phone
for a second time
the girl just laughs
“Figures” she says
shaking her head
she looks back
over at him
her face framed
in love and pity
“I can’t miss this bus”
“Or I’ll never make work”
“If you’re ok”
“I’m going to hop on”
he pulls himself
to a sitting position
and answers with
a feeble
“I’m fine”
as she steps
on to the
bus platform
he quickly shouts
“What about your phone?”
“It’s only a phone”
“Mister”
“Your life is”
“Much more important”
“To me”
“Then it could”
“Ever be!”
as she gives him
the most beautiful
smile
he has ever seen
as the bus door
closes between them
and takes her away,
feeling stunned
by her comments
he says
in a barely audible
voice
“But you don’t”
“Even know me”
and in that
moment
his black heart
produced
a little bit
of love
instead of
Hate
and he found
he liked it…
