“The Movies”
They sat
in the very
front row
of the theater
as the trailers
begun to roll
it was their first
official date
not counting
sitting together
at lunch and
study hall
for the last
week,
they had decided
on the original
“Alien”
from 1979
neither had seen it
but the place
here
liked to play
retro movies
in one of it’s
five theaters
throughout the week,
their weren’t many
people in their
theather
and none
anywhere close to
the front row.
He had asked
her
if she wanted
anything from the
snack bar
as they
walked by
she quietly
shook her head
no,
he was unsure
about
holding her hand
as they walked
through the lobby
he was afraid
if he took it
and she
pulled it away
he would feel
crushed
and unable to
recover
but now
he felt rudderless
was he walking
too fast
each step seemed
out of place
he wanted to
pull her along
or be pulled
by her
he was so
nervous
he just really felt
the need
for some sort of
physical contact
something
to make him
feel wanted,
she was starving
when he asked
her
at the snack bar
but she wasn’t
going to take
a chance
on a spill
or getting something
stuck in her
retainer
not on a
first date
she wanted to
grab his hand
when he handed
her
a ticket
but he quickly
put it in
his pocket
was she already
liking him
way too much
for a first date,
he got to
the large doors
that led inside
about 20-feet
before her
unaware
he was
out pacing her
two steps to one
as they walked
along
he just wanted
to sit down
he felt so
out of place
walking
next to her
he was tall
and had such
a jerky walk
she seemed to
glide across
the lobby floor
so smooth and
balanced,
she thought
he was so
sweet
taking those
little half-steps
trying not to
hurry her along
holding the big
doors
for her
looking so
handsome
standing their
like the Queen’s
guard,
they stood atop
the long ramp
leading down
besides the
rows of seats
she was about
10-feet further down
the ramp
when he asked
“Where should we sit?”
she ran back up
the ramp
and grabbed his
hand
then started pulling
him
down the descending
ramp
“We’re going to sit”
“Front and center”
“I want to look”
“That Alien”
“Right in the eye”
she said
with glee
feeling much more
excited
than nervous,
her hand was so
soft
he wished the
ramp
would go on
forever
just so he could
keep holding on
to it,
she had taken
the edge off his
nervousness
with that grasp
of his hand,
she dropped her
body
into a seat
right in the middle
of the front row
sitting cross legged
in her chair
he looks down
at her
trying to decide
which side of
her
to sit on
she reaches up
tugging on his
sleeve
making him chose
her left side
he leans back
in his chair
stretching out
his long legs
a nice advantage
to sitting in
the front row
and slides
his body
from the middle
of his chair
a few inches
to his right
a slight lean
closer to her,
she wondered
if he had
ever gone out
on a date before
he was
so much more
relaxed at school
she wanted to
ask him
but wouldn’t
didn’t want to
embarrass him
in case she was
right
he just looked
so stiff and
uncomfortable
sitting there,
the lights dim
she pats his
right leg
with her
left hand
“OH, I can’t wait”
she says
as the first
trailer rolls,
that simple pat
on the leg
helped him to
believe
she wanted to
be their
with him
that added
insurance
opened up
his dialog
with her
in the form
of
witty remarks
his own personal
play by play
during the trailers,
she couldn’t
stop herself
from a constant
mildly suppressed
giggle
as his one line
jokes
rolled along
with the teasers,
as the last one
finished
a message
popped up
on to the screen
reminding people
to turn-off
their cell phones,
as they pulled out
their phones
each one was
looking deeply
into the other’s
eyes
as they fumbled
to switch off
their phones
without breaking
the visual bond
between them,
there was an
unspoken
understanding
in this look
they both were
sharing
telling them
that nobody else
in this world
right now
was more important
than the person
sitting right
next to
them,
as the room
goes dark
he
reaches over
and as the
movie’s light
reflects
off the screen
you can see
them
leaning into
each other
shoulders touching
both heads
titled inwards
as they sit
while lovingly
holding
each other’s
hands…
