“Opportunity Knocks”

He knew
she didn’t
love him
but in his
mind
that didn’t really
matter
all that much,
he wanted to
love her
he honestly
thought
he had to
love her
though
he never could
really explain
to himself
why he felt
so strongly
driven
in this tireless
pursuit,
he considered
himself
smarter
than average
when he took
the time to
consider
such matters,
but in reality
that smug
personal
commentary
on his
better than
most
intellectual
rating system
points out with
brilliance
just how far
below the bar
of normal
he really is
skating at,
he looked up
the words
obsession
infatuation
and a few
others
trying to see
if any of them
were pertinent
to his situation
concerning his
love
for her,
but they all
seemed
to describe
someone
not in control
of their feelings,
which cut him
out
of all those
little
desperate
and helpless
circles
of misguided people
he knew he
didn’t belong
categorized
with,
he on the
other hand
knowingly
took his love
and packed
as much of it
as he could
in to every
interaction
he had with
her,
it was a lot
of work
never letting
even the slightest
opportunity
slip by
without him
taking
out his heart
and squeezing it
till that,
and every other
opportunity
that presented
it’s self
was saturated
with his love,
at the end
of every night
he liked to
review
his whole day
checking
and then
double checking
making sure
even the smallest
of the small
opportunities
were filled to
capacity
with his love
and when his
nightly audit
would pass
inspection
he would lie
back in bed
and fall asleep
with a
well-earned smile
dominating
his face
and try and
dream
of new ways
that tomorrow
might bring
him
to give
her
his love…
