     “Missed Call”

She waited
all day
for his call
promises of a day
spent together
hung up in her
head
as time taunted
her
as it crept past,
its not that you
didn’t call
she once tried
to explain to
him
its that you said
you would,
splitting little hairs
he replied
no
breaking little promises
she said softly
to herself
he didn’t seem
to understand
or care
she had spent
that whole day
going over
all the things
they could do
together
in her mind
none of them
were terribly exciting
other than they
all involved him,
its just a phone call
he had said
get over it
getting mad
at her for
continually trying
to show him
why it bothered
her so,
him
unaware of
all the mental
baggage
she had attached
to that one call.
This time
she tried not to
care
lying to herself
when she checks
the time
on her phone
while really just
checking for
missed calls,
afraid her value
to him
has decreased
no longer worthy
of a simple
10-second call
of explanation
or even worse
was yesterday’s
call to her
his last,
her mind is
baiting her
picking up on
any little insecurities
and breathing life
in to them
she skips out
on dinner
retreats to her
room
as the sun
falls out of the
sky
wanting to forgive
him
for anything
he might have
done
just so he would
have to call her
talk to her
she knew
she would accept
any excuse
to keep on loving
him
but tomorrow’s
day
brings no relief
from yesterday’s
pain
of not knowing
why
her late night
calls
still remain
unanswered
as the morning
finds her
curled around
her pillow
phone still in
hand
wearing what
she wore
the day before,
she makes a new
vow,
if he calls
by noon
she can still
understand
she can still
forgive him
she says
to herself
as she paints on
a face of
hope
and prepares
to challenge
the on coming
day
with a fractured
smile…
