I still remember the day and trust me memory is a problem lately
Pier seventy, Seattle waterfront,today where the Alaska cruises take off.
Then it was Adams News Company. Working Sunday, double time
and not happy. Three bums crossed the street carrying all they owned.
Today the area taken over by drug addicts and street people. As
one of the men approached unshaven scary looking. I was ready to
protect myself, "Sir, do you know the time?" The bells on Church up above
began to chime. It was noon. "Sorry to bother you I was ready for
mass to begin." And he turned and crossed himself. The others waiting
up the road. We shared a moment, We shared a prayer. Without asking I passed to him money
for breakfast. First he refused but it wasn't a refusal he could really
give. He was not bumming. "God bless you sir!" Judging a book by its cover.
I wrote this for him:
"Let No Man of Faith be denied!"
I spied the steeple of a Church
High upon, a lofty perch
From miles, upon an unkempt hill
One could see the spire still!
The peoples voices sang about,
Peace throughout the land without a doubt.
There were songs of love and fellowman;
In came this drunk with trembling hand.
He staggered up and through the door,
Sign of the cross collapsing on the Alder floor.
It was too much for the Perishers to ignore,
Remove this man and there became a roar.
Up stepped one man with a loving heart
Of his tithe to give this drunk a start
Years passed: The deed was long forgot
Pledges for a new Church build upon this spot
Up stepped this man with a generous gift;
"When I was down this Church gave me a lift!"
The new sanctuary stands proud for all to see,
And above the choir sings a message down to me.
In one voice they are singing --some even cried,
The words of praise, "Let no man of faith be denied!"
I was inspired to write this because only recently I had
a Life After Death experience. My first two poems were about
life after death and meeting Mom in heaven.
