Autobiography Of A War 1914-18

It was a bad war a sad war
A war of hopeless despair
Marshalled by Generals
From the depths of comfy chairs
A war of mass sacrifice
Mass heroism as well
As time after time
Men marched forward into hell.
It was a mean war
With little rhyme or reason
A war that dragged on
For season after season.

A war without hope
A war of rot and stench
Squalor and degradation
In the world  of the trench.
  Blood and bodies absorbed
Into churned up mud and filth
Bringing forth ScarletFlanders
Poppies from the after wars tilth.
A war whose peace
Most surely paved the way
For the war that soon followed
And the conflcts of today.

A peace of broken promises
War To End All War never realised
That Land Fit For Heroes
That still hasn't materialised,
I stand here today with
A veteran's respect and pride
To honour those millions
Who bravely  fought and died
And those many many more
Who somehow carried on
Wracked by painful memories
For  friends and comrades gone
