THE KIDS LAST FIGHT

In 1938 Al Hostak was Middleweight Champion of the world. He fought
many fights against Tony Zale. Growing up his nephews were my neighborhood
buddies. They had a boxing gym on the roof of their garage. Al took us
under his wings. A team was formed. Entered into the Golden Gloves. I was
not one of the most promising of the team. Six foot three a hundred and fifty
pounds. In my weight class I was hard to hit. Nine fighters all but one eliminated
in the first night. Long arms hard to hit I won my first fight. My second fight
I was scared to death. It wasn't like sparing with kids. This guy was talking
smack. My goal was just to survive. He was going to cut up my pretty face.
For a minute I looked around. My face not that pretty. Entering the third round
I was winning the fight. I was cutting him up with jabs. I thought of someday
looking in a mirror looking like him. I wanted out of that ring.

Oldie sung by Frankie Laine
"The kids last fight!"
I was in high school
Lying about my age to get into smokers
I was tall for my age looked older
I drew a sailor twice my age
Looked more pro than Golden Gloves
Looking at his face he had been in fights before
In the gym
I had been warming up to the kids last fight
The sailor took everything I threw at him
Smiling looking smug and saying he was wearing me out
He only had body shots and they hurt
His face was bloody one eye closed
Blood gushed out his nose
I could do everything but knock him out
The ref came between rounds and said,
"Kid you have stopped fighting."
The third round I just danced avoided being hit
"I am not about to beat the man to a pulp"
And I began to think to myself the kids last fight
There were two reasons I gave up boxing
I couldn't stand the sight of blood
especially my own
The second reason sanity
I remember the ref stopping the fight raising his hand
Then coming to me, "Kid you could have been Champ
you stopped fighting." I was only seventeen
"Go on kid go on kid but how were they to know
it was the kids last fight." True enough it was mine
Two official fights. One win one disqualifying loss
I watched the finals it ended in cuts
But the sailor was still on his feet
the sailor danced around like he had won
I was tall and lean he was short and mean
Had to be the funniest boxing match ever seen
The kids last fight
