He wakes this day to reminisce
Of yesterdays and how he wished
This day would come to stand at ease
If just but once with heart appeased
Not long ago he walked upon
A land not his, these days bygone
Where blood was spilled in taking ground
Just past bunkers and pillbox sounds
Rat tat tat tat Machine gun fire
Would spray upon brothers inspired
To bring a peace, great was the cost
Of courage spent, countless were lost
The nights were dark yet he'd find time
To write his wife a few short lines
In them he tried to bring her peace
Of peace he knew she would feel least
He served twenty of youthful years
Each shot fired upon him seared
Flesh wounds leaving their marks on him
Reminding soul of where it's been
At times a flinch wakes him of thoughts
Thoughts of a time where peace was sought
As war pressed on a weary man
Thousands the grains of dirt and sand
Beachheads where surf once foamed of blue
This day brought red of bodies strewn
As if it were just yesterday
Suffered by loss on his mind plays
They were the young and old alike
They were the strength and gallant knights
That slayed dragons of war and plight
Bringing to end his tours this night
A Veterans Day write to those who served and serve this day.
GOD bless the United States Military and its allies
