Brilliance

Hey
what was that..
that sparkling ball of light
streaking across the night's
canvass of sky?

Oh,
that was brilliance
my brilliance
while it dawned
while it lasted
my life it seems has
passed me
by
that is,
only in others' eyes
but only when
I chose to believe in
that way, their way of seeing
that I myself
am un-fulfilling
and not agreeable or agreeing
with all and any of the possibilities
of the who and what
I ought to be
said they,
but not I,
never to be said...by me.

How I weighed in their
meddling sanctimoniously hands,
too much in my plans,
far too much or far-far too little...
how I never climbed high enough,
remained quite in the middle...
how I never quite met
the mark nor the grade of
of par excellence
and lacked the sort of
appropriate provenance.

(How the must exhaust themselves
with all their calculations
and accounting.)

Life's better served on my terms
is the better souffle
the savory prize
I claim.
I never made much money
but enjoyed quite enough notoriety
the equivalent of a lovely beastly fame.
One that makes the richest of the rich
feel they've had enough
and the satiety's sufficient.
No nagging need to conference God
to file a final complaint.

I won't be bringing it with me
to the over-crowded cemetery
in a U-haul truck
nor compounding massive interest in any quarter
but on my own account...
how contentedly I know my worth
exactly,
I'm just the right amount.

Ever been put in a position where you feel
you're in a movie remake for Defending Your Life?
I'm enough. I am where I'm supposed to be.
Let others make the effort to find their own place
and resist the temptation to show me mine.
Live and let live.
