What can a poet say
To a man who went away
Stabbed by a killer's knife
Who stole your truck
Then thieved your life
What can a woman say
To a woman
To make it go away
The tears
The pain
The loss of hope
I don't know if I could cope
What can a mother say
To four kids with no dad today
I wish I could say
"He's took a vacation"
He'll be back soon
Opposed to the real situation
What can a night nurse say
Who once worked across the street
From Buddy
On night shift too
That graveyard shift is cruddy
But you do what you have to do
What can a grandmother say
Who could have been the one to stop
Last night coming home from her son's
But stayed home instead
That's going to save him from that kid
What can the townsfolk say
That we want to turn back yesterday
That we wished him sick
To call in
Stay home in bed
Then right now he'd be alive not dead
What can his coworkers say
That sometimes helping others doesn't pay
When you're on your way to work alone
Don't stop to help
Just call the police on your cell phone
What can his God say
That the devil's never going to go away
He'll possess some kid
In a stolen car
without a soul
Without a prayer
Because the evil roams the Earth down there
What can any of us say
To help the grief go away
To ease the numbness that your are living
There's nothing but our useless thoughts we're giving
Because no matter what we do
He cannot come back
To Mrs. Herron
His daughter
Or his boys
Right now
No joys
Perhaps all pain
Storm of insane
Will reign awhile
Because he was the sparkle in your smile
What can our prayers say
That you all are on our minds today
That we don't want to be in your way
Still somehow we will pray
For those affected by the loss
Of one man who paid the cost
For helping someone nearly insane
Just want you to know
We feel your pain.
