“He Said”

She wasn’t sure
what he meant
when he dropped
“Don’t look back”
as he kissed
her
and walked
away
not stopping
till he was
well out of
her life,
one of her
better break-ups
to date
no foul words
or thrown
beer bottles
though
she was the
one
with the mouth
and the arm
both times
but in her
defense
she was drunk
both times too
and did miss
with the bottle,
did he mean
don’t relive
the past?
Like she wants
to go back
and have him
reexamine
all her actions
again
with his own
personal
commentary
on how she
can improve
herself
at the end
of every night,
gees
we only went
out
for like a month
that’s the problem
with meeting a
guy
at a bar
they always
seem funny
and easy going
at first
can’t stop telling
you
how beautiful
you are
and how sexy
you look
walking on the
wild side of
life
dressed like
you don’t give
a damn
and liking the
attention
that comes with
that statement,
then
two weeks in
and he’s trying
to change
everything
about you
your make-up
hair
and the verbal
selections
you use to
express yourself,
that look and
language
that once made
you edgy
and avant-garde
he’s now
trying to get
you
to tone down
and box up
around his friends
“don’t look back”
she mutters
as if I want
to become his
mother,
she downs
the rest of
her beer
“he’s lucky this”
“wasn’t empty”
she jokingly
tells herself
as she starts
looking through
her closet
plotting out
what she is
going to wear
when she
goes out
clubbing tonight…
