    “The Change”

She slid
out of
her chair
taking with her
a backpack
containing shoes
and a change
of clothes,
today
was a real
bitch
and she wasn’t
going to
wear her blue
scrubs
one foot farther
today
then she had
too
she took her
backpack
into a unused
examination room
and closed the
door
she didn’t sit
on the examination
table
for some reason
that odd crinkling
sound
that the thin
paper makes
when you sit
on it
just makes her
cringe
she backed herself
up against
the counter
with the sink
in it
and popped
herself
up on top
of it
she pulled up
one of her
long legs
and put the
heel of her
high top sneaker
on the handle
of a drawer
and started to
unlace it
causing the
pressure
to be slowly
released
on her foot
as the laces
begin to slide
themselves
through the eyelets
on her sneaker
her stress
from the day
starts to diminish
as she loosens
the laces
way more than
she needs too
till the sneaker
just dropped from
her foot,
the day had
tested her
and she’s still
not sure
if she had
passed
all of the day’s
tests
she relaxes
her
sneaker free
leg
letting it dangle
from the
counter top
she’s sitting on
as she pulls up
her other leg
repeating the
process
till the other
sneaker falls
beside its
opposite twin
she wiggles her
toes
the cool air
pushing against
the thin membrane
of her sock
is a refreshing
and calming
feeling
she thinks about
taking off her
socks
and letting the
cool air
caress her feet
but that can
wait
till she gets
home,
she puts both
palms
on the counter
and pushes down
holding her
full weight
above it
for a few
seconds
before pushing
off
and landing on
her toes
balanced on their
tips
for no reason
other than
she likes to
stretch her
legs
and arch her
back
in this fashion,
and as she
breaks this
pose
she drops the
lower half
of her blue
scrubs
letting them
ride
her long legs
all the way
down
to the floor
she steps out
of the blue
work day material
surrounding her
ankles
picks them up
and neatly folds
them
before setting them
on the thin
paper
of the examination
table
careful not to
crinkle the paper
as she goes
then she pulls
her top
over her head
folds it
and lies it
on top of
the previously
removed
bottom half
of her uniform
a feeling of
freedom
sweeps over her
as she stands
there
in her bra
and panties
a matching set
that would
dominate
the attention
of anyone
lucky enough
to see her
in them
but she has
no plans
as of yet
as to putting
them
on display,
she takes a
half step
to her backpack
reaches in
and pulls out
a pair of jeans
she works one
leg in
and then the
other
only pulling them
two thirds of
the way up
her legs,
that cool air
in the room
starting to have
an effect
on more than
just her feet
so she expedites
squeezing into
her very tight
black tee-shirt
the word
ROXY
spelled out
across her chest
she makes a few
adjustments
before tucking in
her shirt
and zipping up
her jeans
leaving the top
button
still undone
as she retrieves
a pair of
black booties
from her backpack
holding them together
before
dropping them
to the floor
both heels
striking the floor
simultaneously
and then
standing upright
on their own
she slips one
foot
partially into
the black bootie
before
reaching down
and using her
index finger
to get her
heel in
the same thing
with the other
bootie
before standing
erect
letting her feet
find themselves
in the black
booties
then running
her hands
along her jeans
then over her
top
double checking
the fittings
before letting
that final button
begin its job
of keeping the
whole look
tight
with an audible
snap,
she loads her
high tops
into the backpack
before putting
her scrubs
on top of them
she grabs a
pair of sunglasses
out of an inner
pocket
of her bag
before zipping
it up
and throwing the
backpack
over her left
shoulder
she slips on
her sunglasses
as she leaves
the confinements
of the examination
room
the harsh
overhead lighting
not so bad
when filtered
through
54 millimeter
polarized lens
she makes her
way
down the hall
and past reception
drawing
lots of looks
from co-workers
and patients
who were
unaware of
just how much
of a body
she had hiding
in there
behind that
baggy wall of
blue
she normally
wore,
she gave them
all
an ultra-bright
smile
as she leaned
against the door
the mid-day
summer sun
being held at
bay
from her
by a quarter-inch
of tinted
office door glass
but she can
feel
its heat
radiating
towards her
the sun
beckoning her
outside,
as her work
day
has come to
an end
and her real
life
is about
to begin…
