“Alone at the Beach”
She tried to
roll out of
her
California King
sized bed
which was
currently
swallowing
her up
at her
beach front
hotel,
the immensity
of the bed
was magnified
by her small
frame
and that she
alone
occupied it
though that
wasn’t
the original plan,
she was
barefoot
with bits of
sand
still stuck to
her feet
from her
midnight walk
along the unlit
beach
which would
have been
romantic
for any two
people in love
but alone
in the dark
it became more
reflective,
she lay
in her big
bed
thinking of her
late night
walk
the moon
and the stars
their light
creating a
sparkling canvass
above her
as she carried
a small
rechargeable
lantern
to light her
way
along the water’s
edge,
it’s beacon of
light
on the wet
sand beneath
her
lit it up
brilliantly
a mirror image
of the night’s
sky above
her,
she starts
dragging
her big toe
from her
right foot
as she goes
creating a valley
through her stars
in the sand
she continues
forward
for a while
her big toe
still separating
the moist sand
then turns
and looks back
at her long
line
not sure if
its disappearing
into the night
by escaping the
reach
of her
rechargeable
torch
or getting
washed away
from the incoming
surf
she starts
following her
line back
her curiosity
being too much
to ignore,
on the way
she starts
making a new
line
parallel to the
first
with the big
toe
from her left
foot
she thinks
of it as
an experiment
though she’s
not sure what
it is suppose
to prove
she didn’t
keep it up
very long
before she
tires of her
quest
never getting
to
the end of
her line
and sits in
the sand
at the very
edge
of the surf’s
reach
taking in the
sounds of the
unseen waves
listening for their
approach
as they sing
a final death
note
with a crash
just off the
beach
and only being
seen by her
when their
white foam
gets pushed
to the perimeter
of the ocean’s
domain
and brought
out of the
darkness
by her
rechargeable light
as she sits
thinking about
her two
parallel lines,
she pictures
two people
going in different
directions
coming so close
to each other
they could touch
but maybe
destine
to never meet,
is her soulmate
maybe
just out of
view
dragging their
big toe
in the sand
chasing after
her
never ending
line
but never quite
catching up
to her,
or is she
following
their line
in the wrong
direction
or maybe
she was
meant to be
alone
all these
thoughts
going through
her head
as she sits
in the sand
on the beach,
she rolls onto
her stomach
neither arm
able to reach
the side of
the massive
bed
she likes her
time alone
but right now
she’s feeling like
something’s missing
these beds
should have
warning labels
“When used by
fewer than two
people,
feelings of
loneliness
may overcome
the single occupant”
she rolls back
over
and sits up
the morning sun
streaming in
through the large
open window
showing the
calm sea
out front
it catches her
right in the
face
she tilts her
head
all the way
to the left
till her ear
almost
touches her
shoulder
keeping her
back
perfectly straight
and face free
from the over
powering rays
as she overlooks
the sea
it’s vast open
space
shrinking her
bed
down in size,
alone
in a bed
whose edges
are farther
than you can
reach
or alone
in an ocean
for as far
as you
can see
maybe alone
is just a state
of mind,
she thinks
about this
as she tilts
her head
all the way
to the right
till her ear
almost
touches her
shoulder
never losing
her view
of the sea
but still keeping
her face out
of the harsh
light
from the low
hanging sun,
but still
it would have
been nice
to have woken
up
in the arms
of a lover
who made her
forget
she was ever
alone last night,
she lies back
in her bed
coming to the
decision
that when the
morning light
reaches her face
it will be
time
to get up,
till then
she is going
to enjoy
the cool fresh
ocean air
and debate
the pro’s
and con’s
of being alone
in this massively
large bed…
