There was a Time

There was a time
When it was wrong
To be born with blue eyes
Many of those
Who were unfortunate enough to be so
Were persecuted
Sometimes even killed
They were different
Somehow they didn’t fit in
This was nothing they could control
They had done nothing wrong
And finally
Over time
People finally began to realize that
And now
They are simply allowed to be
One of us

There was a time
When it was wrong
To be born left handed
Many of those
Who were unfortunate enough to be so
Again were persecuted
They were different
They would never fit into the real world
Many were abused
Even by those they trusted
Their parents or their teachers
They had their hand slapped
If they picked up a pencil or a pen
With the wrong hand
They were embarrassed
Often in front of their friends
And were forced to write
With the right hand
Yes, I was one of those kids
Finally people started to realize
That maybe a person
Was simply born that way
Studies were done
Evidence was gathered
And finally people started to understand
It was ok
Simply to be left handed
There was nothing wrong with that

There was a time
When it was wrong
To be born a woman

There was a time
When it was wrong
To be born gay

There was a time
And there still
Is
