     “What are Words for?”

She didn’t even
give him a
fake smile
this morning
he wondered
if she thought
of it
more as a
chore
like taking out
the trash
something that
had to be
done
before she could
get on with
the rest of
her day,
he worked
all week
to come up
with
witty
comments
and intriguing
questions
things
that would
hold
her interest
long enough
for him
to get
a little
personal
time
out of her
but when he
heard her
voice
he panicked
and left his
memorized
phrases
and polished
words
in a dark
corner
of his mind,
the last two
weeks
have been a
void
of her presents,
an awkward
parting glance
was the last
contact
he had
with her
so he was
really hoping
for
more than a
mere smile
when he saw
her today,
she knew he
was close
she could hear
him working
one or two
isles away
she called out
his name
and added
a “Hi”
after it
maybe he
would
let her off
easy
and just holler
back a
“good morning”
so she could
get back to
her duties
without
getting stuck
in a stagnate
conversion
with him
but she could
hear him
scramble about
trying to
catch up
to her,
four hours of
sleep
just isn’t
enough
to find the
energy
for a fake
smile
she tried
but her lips
barely stretched
before falling
back
into place
on her face,
she just couldn’t
put up a
fake façade
this morning
pretending to
show interest
in what he
had to say,
if he’d just
give her
a few more
hours’ worth
of morning
time
before dragging
a personal
response
out of her
foggy brain,
he doesn’t know
why
he treats every
interaction
with her
as if it’s a
life or
death
situation
so afraid
one little
mistake
will ruin
the whole
moment
he has with
her
he wants to
tell himself
he’s just trying
so hard
to make everything
perfect
for her sake
but he can’t
hide
the truth
he knows its
a fault line
he has
that runs across
his heart
clear down to
the very core
of his being,
he catches a
quick glimpse
of her
walking across
the top of
his field of
view
leaving her
silhouette
for him
behind
unaware
he’ll spend
the next hour
crunching words
and pasting
letters
together
for the next
time
he sees her
hoping to build
a unique
verbal structure
that will captive
her
just long
enough
to get a
few personal
words
from her
and maybe
a smile…
