A Pillar Of Society

Prep school at age four
Away from Nanny's tender care
But she was at home waiting
Every night he got back there.
On to Public school proper where
Lifelong contacts were made
In a closed shop that put
Trade unionism in the shade.

Next followed Oxbridge where,
With need for learning like a thirst,
After three short years he
Achieved that expected First.
All the vacs spent relaxing
On daddy's large estates
Or on exclusive holidays with
his select band of mates,

Then came his Masters and
The Doctorate followed on,
But his thirst for knowledge
Still hadn't  yet gone.
His fellowship for research
Passed a few more years.
One or two relationships
That had ended in tears.

He met a fellow Don
Took her for his wife
And together they continued
On the academic life.
Special Government Advisor on
Matters of Special Import
Though his non academic experience
Was just a big fat nought.

The Upper Chamber followed
Where he whiled away a few hours
Maintaining  his existence in
Even more Ivory Towers.
Much  of his time spent in college,
When he wasn't taking his seat
The Chair of Esoteric Studies
Had made his life complete.

An existence full of privilege with
Little experience of real life,
None of the hardships and joys
Or daily struggles and strife.
And so he left having been
Of this world, not really in it,
Almost isolated from society,
A modern style of hermit

Whose theories,  based
On do as I say, not as I do,
Had  far reaching effects
On the lives of me and you.
His last recorded words
Were spoken out quite loud
I've done my very best and Nanny
Would have been so very proud.
