Cruising throughout my literary history
Toni Morrison showed me the bluest of eyes
Until she became my beloved;
As I listened to songs of Solomon
She gave me a look of mercy
And whispered
God help the child;
Alice Walker colored me purple
And watching it as a youth was an everyday use,
Which gave me the knowledge that
I possess the secret of joy,
But I almost lost it in 2014 when
I went in search of our mothers
And when I found mom dukes
She told me
You can't keep a good woman down;
While their eyes were watching God
Zora told me dust tracks on a road but
Men should never be mules,
As I grew into a man Hurston help
Teach me Every tongue gots to confess
To get stress off their chest and
How to live without regrets;
Octavia Butler's kindred touched the center of my spirit,
Her parables kept me from feeling terrible and miserable,
Even when people made fun of me and called me a wild seed
I just said watch me grow,
And once I knew that I knew
I finally reached Adult rites;
When my house burned down
I had nightmares about the fire next time,
But brother James Baldwin had to go tell it on the mountain
That I was born to be a native son born in another country,
Nobody knew my name and Beale street
Definitely couldn't talk
So I decided I'd leave no name in those streets;
R.W told me what happened to Uncle Tom's children
Which made me proud to be a Black Boy
As a native son,
Even though others considered me the outsider;
I tried to explain but the white man wouldn't listen
To the long dream
So I left boiling with steam,
So frustrated my scream was louder than
12 million black voices all yelling simultaneously;
Pagan Spain brought back memories of savage holidays
That colored my curtain blue with a
Father's law because I believe Black Power
Is my Rite of Passage
Even though street justice was not written by mr. shakespear
So I've begun to meditate,
Now I'm seeing into tomorrow;
Like Phillis Wheatley I'm a poet by nature,
Jotting down thoughts to one day have complete writings;
Following her footprints while reading her script (print);
When I got on the W.E.B I was the Philadelphia Negro,
When I traveled back to Africa they referred to me as The Negro,
And when I returned to America they called it Black Reconstruction
So I informed them I was part of the talented tenth
Even though I believe 100% can advance to this
Because I know
The Souls of Black Folk…
