“The Private Lie”

She couldn’t see
all she was
doing
was building a
wall
around her lie
protecting it
against the truth
which would
rip
her neatly
packaged
life
in to pieces,
she noticed the
slight tilt of
his cell phone
screen
sometimes
its the
chance lean
of his body
that’s blocking
her view
as he reads
his incoming text
she conveniently
points her attention
in the opposite
direction
not having to
address
any of her
suspicions
or fears
if she never
really sees them
he slides his
phone
back into his
pocket
her eyes now
finding it safe
to concentrate
their gaze
back on him,
ten years
and two kids
has given her
plenty of time
to perfect
her invisible
walls
and glances
towards
nowhere,
she quickens
her steps
to catch up to
him
cover the
ground
she lost
staring at a
building
she had no
interest in
she picks up
the conversation
in the middle
of her last
thought
right before she
abandoned it
due to the
tilt
of his screen
he drops
back in
with a few
sentences
of his own
both of them
walking and
talking
till she hears
the low hum
from that all
to familiar
vibration
of his phone
she drops back
a step
watching his
face
as its hit
from the light
of the liquid
crystal display
his eyes dart
to the left
checking on her
proximity
before he reads
the message
an all too
common
reaction
when he sees
the senders
name
but she has
already
cut down her
pace
spending her time
comforting
an old stray
dog
a couple more
strokes
down his back
till her husband
puts his phone
away
she looks into
the dogs eyes
he looks back
into hers
seeing all the
truth
she’s hiding from
and not understanding
why
before trotting
away,
her husband
calls back to
her
his phone
put away
as he holds
out his hand
to her
they need to
hurry their
walk
he needs to
head back in
to the office
tonight
can’t make the
movies
like they had
planned
she gives him
a smile of
understanding
slips her arm
around his waist
leaning her body
into his
as he gives
her
a little kiss
on the top
of her head
maybe next week
he says
as she pulls
him
tightly
next to her
telling him
how much
she loves him
while pretending
not to notice
the vibration
of his phone
pressing up
against
her body…
