“The Touch”
She lightly
brushed
against his
back
as she walked
by
behind him
talking on her
cell phone,
causing his whole
being
to go blank
the very moment
that slight contact
was made
by her,
the complete
universe
as he knew it
collapsed into
the body of
a five foot
four inch
red head
whose name
he didn’t
even know,
he couldn’t
slow
the snap
of his neck
as he turned
to follow
his new
found
north star
as she walked
ten more feet
away
then catching
him
by surprise
as she spun
on the toes
of her left
foot
her black
high tops
not making a
sound
as she plants
her right
foot
pointing it in
his direction
catching him
still staring
at her
perfectly
balanced
body
as she starts
her
ten steps
back towards
him,
she displays
a smile of
recognition
which he
comprehends
but doesn’t
understand
was that flash
of her face
an acknowledgement
of just his
presences
in the room
or an admission
that there is
more behind
that
glancing touch
then he really
knows,
she makes
another
soundless turn
and continues
to pace
back and forth
behind him,
he’d sell his
soul
right now
just to feel
any part of
her body
softly touching
his
he tries to
will her feet
into taking a
small misstep
losing her
balance
and using him
to break her
fall
the simplistic
fantasy
of an unimaginative
man
maybe,
but it’s complex
enough
for him to
get lost in
as the corner
of his eye
follows her
through the
ten steps
then spin
to the left
march
that she’s on,
till the break
in her step
when she
freezes
five feet
away
facing him
looking down
at her now
silent phone
his nervousness
takes over
the situation
unsure of what
to do
so he does
nothing
afraid
this moment of
anticipation
will be the
last thing
he ever shares
with her,
she utters a
low grunt
before tucking
her cell phone
into the back
left pocket
of her jeans
and heads out
the door
without giving
him
any kind of
physical
display
to let him
know
she knew he
was still there
or that their
scene
was over,
his heart starts
beating slower
as the room
depressurizes
back down to
its normal
gravitational
pull
she left him
holding a life
without meaning
as all those
possibilities
she created
got yanked
away,
but he still
owns that moment
through brief
and insignificant
to most
it reminded him
of the magic
that can only
be found
in those first
few beats
between two
strangers
all your senses
are heightened
as you look
for meaning
in every little
thing
she does,
time is broken
down by
seconds
instead of hours
and the bright
flash
of a smile
or quick
glance
from her
green eyes
can give your
life
a whole new
meaning,
in less time
then it takes
to walk ten
steps
and spin…
