Combat Leave

We're getting our son's room ready
Coming on leave from Afghanistan
I knew the lad that went away
Will I know a combat seasoned man
We would laugh at common experience
Sgt Major Bastard on the drill square
Beastings.exercises, pissups
All that stuff we could share.

I've never been in action,
Experienced enemy fire,
Gone through the stress of
Combat's emotional tripwire.
Oh I've seen active service
In one or two strange places
Even been close enough
To see enemy faces.

Never been through the stress
Of danger in an alien land
But I'll do my very best
And try and understand.
He left as youth
Barely yet a man
And he's coming home
As a combat veteran.

He may not want to talk
Well just have to wait and see
But if he wants to stay quiet
Then that's alright with me.
We're getting his room ready
Preparing it as a retreat
To hide from old acquaintances
He may not be quite ready to meet.
