“A Walk in the Sea”

She had gone
into the water
as far as
her waist
not really caring
about the fact
she couldn’t
swim
the ocean swells
never breaking
into waves
as they went
through her
heading for the
beach,
her whole world
has been crashing
down
all around her
her job went
first
taking with it
a big piece
of her personal
foundation,
she calmly steps
out deeper
the sun
making it hard
to see the
shoulder high
water
rising up
before its
slapping her
in the face,
every minute
or so
a bigger swell
would pull her
off her feet
giving her a
brief
helpless feeling
till her toes
once again
found the sandy
ocean floor
she liked that
sensation of
suspended fate
as the water
rolled over her
releasing visions
of her boyfriend
and her
all taking place
before he pulled
out
the last supporting
block
in her Jengaed
game of life,
she leaned
forward
bracing herself
against the strength
of the larger
swells
as she thought
about
the remaining
options
she had left
as she
mentally
crossed them
off
her list of
possibilities,
she inched
deeper
and closer to
the sun
misjudging
her last breath
before the next
swell
magnifying her
time spent
under the water
she has to
struggle
to hold on
to her balance
which is on
the very edge
of being one
step too far
tempting fate
to do more
than toy with
her life,
her legs are
getting tired
their muscles
constantly clinched
trying to stay
attached
to the sandy
bottom
feeling the cold
of the water
for the first
time
she starts to
shiver
clouding the
clarity of
the happier
memories
she’s trying to
chase,
she thinks about
one big step
forward
a final walk
into the sun
another careless
swimmer
washing up on
the shore
but her window
for choice
has closed
as the next
swell breaks
on top of
her
and spits her
from the sea
grabbing on to
the sand
with her hands
and knees
she coughs up
the ocean
as the salty
water
drips from
her nose
leaving her
searching for
a much needed
breath
she pulls herself
through the surf
waiting for her
lungs
to expand
with air
and drops to
her back
where the surf
meets the beach
the water
gently lapping
against her legs
as her eyes
focus
on a never
ending
blue sky
which helps
her to realize
she has a
limitless
horizon
herself
and she still
might have
a few solid
blocks of hope
left standing
together
that she can
build a life
on…
